Shipping is the least environmentally damaging mode for moving freight in New Zealand.  Compared to land-based transport it is a relatively minor contributor to CO2 emissions.

Shipping carries approx. 90% of global freight by volume but produces only 5% of total CO2 emissions. In New Zealand, 15% of domestic freight volume is moved via coastal shipping.

Moving cargo by sea is also 7-8 times more fuel efficient than road transport, and nearly twice as efficient as rail, on a tonne per kilometre basis.

For our environmental integrity, coastal shipping is a safe and sustainable way to move long-haul freight, in addition to helping reduce road congestion.
