What is Demurrage?

Each Port Company allows a set number of free days for containers to be uplifted from their port. If containers are not unlifted within the time period, then demurrage will be incurred on a per day, per container basis. On average each port allows three (3) days free to uplift a container off the port. We suggest you check each port for their specific terms and conditions.

It is important that shippers and consignees are aware of when the free days end as ports normally do not notify companies of pending demurrage costs.

What is Detention?

All containers under Pacifica's control are subject to detention charges.

Detention charges will apply when a container is not returned in accordance with the criteria listed below:

1. Not shipped with Pacifica’s services within 7 days of uplifting empty container.

2. Not returned to Pacifica’s nominated de-hire point within 7 days after day of discharge at destination port.

3. Any container that is not returned to Pacifica within 60 days will be regarded as missing, and the shipper will be held liable for the value of the container any detention charges incurred.
